Strengthen your skills.
The Music Theory Program at the LSU School of Music offers rigorous programs in both undergraduate and graduate study of music theory. Our faculty is comprised of leading scholars in the fields of twentieth-century music and American music, music and mathematics, Soviet/Russian music and music theory, perception/cognition, and corpus studies.
Our undergraduate program is designed to strengthen our students’ analytical skills and musicianship through intensive studies in tonal harmony and counterpoint, form and analysis, chromaticism, and post-tonal theory. The graduate curriculum includes a varied pedagogical methodology, including flipped classroom learning, multimedia resources, and in-class performance to help our students integrate classroom knowledge and knowledge acquisition skills with performance craft.
Our graduate programs (M.M. and Ph.D.) offer intensive studies in areas that include analysis and performance, set theory, transformational theory, corpus studies, and music cognition. Graduate assistantships are available on a highly competitive basis.
