Doctor of Musical Arts
The Doctor of Musical Arts degree is designed to prepare students to be artist-performers and conductors, in either university settings or the professional arena.
The Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree trains and educates highly accomplished musicians for professional careers including higher education teaching through a program combining rigorous coursework and required fieldwork across, typically, a 3-year residency. The profession demands versatility, that is, the all-in-one elite level artist-scholar and the skilled practitioner. The integration of knowledge and theory learned in the classroom and the experiential learning derived from fieldwork is the path for all students to develop this versatility. Requires a minimum of 54 credit hours of graduate coursework beyond the master’s degree. Additional information can be found in the School of Music Graduate Handbook located on the school’s website.
