The LSU Dance Minor is open to all undergraduates at the University. It offers a variety of courses in dance technique (Ballet, Modern, and Jazz), dance history, dance composition, dance improvisation, production/performance opportunities. The Dance Minor is designed to guide our students to achieve creative, technical, and academic excellence.

The Dance minor was created to give official credit to the many students who wish to follow or continue their passion and love of dance while focusing on a different concentration or major while attending LSU. Students are encouraged to register for dance classes in their freshmen year to have the most fulfilling experiences.

The program hosts a minimum of two dance concerts per year. The fall dance concert showcases LSU students performing work by faculty and guest choreographers, while the spring dance concert features work by student choreographers, guest choreographers, and faculty, all performed by the LSU Dance Ensemble.

The LSU dance program collaborates with community dance members in Baton Rouge to offer our students opportunities to take master classes and attend professional dance events. These master classes and dance concert events contribute to our students’ development as artists and performers. Past master classes included by Ailey II, Movement Workshop Group, Parsons, Urban Bush Women, and Flamenco classes by Chris and Lena Jacome.

The dance minor consists of a minimum of 18 credits across technique, theory, and performance.  Six credits in technique are required for the minor.  The technique classes include different levels of ballet, modern, and jazz.  Nine credits (three courses) are needed in dance theory.  The required theory courses include Introduction to Dance, Dance History, and then either Dance Composition or Dance Improvisation. The performance group, the LSU Dance Ensemble, is open through audition only and students receive additional credit either as a dancer or choreographer.
