Biography

Rockford Sansom is a voice and speech specialist, performer, and author whose work spans professional theatre, higher education, executive communication, coaching, and practitioner research. He is an Associate Professor of Voice & Speech at Louisiana State University, Associate Head of the MFA Acting program, and voice coach for LSU’s resident theatre, Swine Palace. He is also an affiliate faculty member in LSU’s linguistics program and serves as faculty adviser to St. Alban’s Chapel, the Episcopal/Anglican community at LSU.

As a voice and accent coach, he has worked Off-Broadway with York Theatre Company, Tectonic Theater Project, and Theater for the New City, and Off-West End with Arcola Theatre. His regional coaching credits include the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Premiere Stages, and the Savannah Repertory Theatre. He has coached Fortune 500 executives, UN delegates, TED speakers, members of the U.S. Congress, and senior leaders in British government and industry. His acting credits include leading roles in Wonderful Town (First National tour), 42nd Street (Asian tour), Bye Bye Birdie (North American tour), and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Off-Broadway, St. Luke’s Theatre). His regional acting credits include Seaside Music Theater, the Orlando Repertory Theatre, and the Oklahoma Shakespeare Festival.

Dr. Sansom is the author or editor of five published books. With Christina Shewell, he co-authored Voice Work: Art and Science in Changing Voices (2nd ed., Wiley-Blackwell), a leading text in vocal training currently in use worldwide in high-profile theatre, music, and speech pathology programs. He also edited four sponsored anthologies for the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA)—The History of Voice Pedagogy, Vocal Traditions, Voice and Identity, and Practitioner Research in Voice Studies (Routledge)—which have contributed to the development of contemporary voice studies. His sixth book, scheduled for publication in 2028, examines the relationship among voice training, methodology, and professional authority.

For seven years, Dr. Sansom was editor of the academic journal Voice and Speech Review (Routledge). He was instrumental in helping the journal attain Q1 status as a top-75 journal in Scopus’s Visual and Performing Arts category. He has published over 35 articles and essays on voice in Theatre, Dance and Performance Training; Journal of Singing; Theatre Journal; Theatre Topics; Methods; Voice and Speech Review; and other publications. He has served on the VASTA Board of Directors and is an editorial board member for Australian Voice.

Dr. Sansom has lectured and led workshops at over 30 universities across Europe, Asia, Australia, and North and South America, including the University of Cambridge and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. His research has been supported by the Moody Research Grant from the LBJ Presidential Library, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH), the Awards to Louisiana Artists and Scholars (ATLAS) grant, and the Dorothy Mennen Voice Research Grant. He is recognized as a Lifetime Distinguished Member of VASTA for “significant achievements in voice research—advancing the global impact of voice and speech training” and is the youngest recipient of this career achievement honor in the organization’s history.

He holds a PhD in education from Capella University, an MFA in theatre from the University of Central Florida, and certifications in Fitzmaurice Voicework, Knight-Thompson Speechwork, and Estill Voice Training, in which he holds Master Trainer status. He is a member of AEA, SAG-AFTRA, and VASTA.
