LA-GWEP to Host Inaugural Alzheimer's and Healthy Aging Research Forum

BATON ROUGE, LA - Louisiana Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (LA-GWEP) will host the inaugural Alzheimer's and Healthy Aging Research Forum on December 10th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Abell Room at the LSU Lod Cook Alumni Center. This workshop will address the multifaceted challenges of aging while exploring evidence-based solutions for healthy and fulfilling living. It will foster collaboration among older adults, care partners, healthcare professionals, and others interested in health and wellness within the aging process.

Speakers will include:

Ashton Applewhite

The author of "This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism," Ashton Applewhite is at the forefront of the emerging movement to raise awareness of ageism and make age a criterion for diversity. A co-founder of the Old School Anti-Ageism Clearinghouse, she speaks widely at venues that have included the TED mainstage and the United Nations. She has written for Harper’s, the Guardian, and the New York Times; has been recognized by the New York Times, the New Yorker, National Public Radio, and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism; and is the voice of Yo, Is This Ageist? In 2022, the United Nations named Ashton one of the Healthy Aging 50: fifty leaders transforming the world to be a better place to grow older.

Vonetta Dotson, PhD 

Vonetta Dotson, PhD

A neuropsychologist, author, and speaker. She is currently a tenured professor at Georgia State University in the Department of Psychology and Gerontology Institute. She is the Senior Project Scientist for Behavioral Health at NASA, Founder and President of CerebroFit Integrated Brain Health and author of Keep Your Wits about You: The Science of Brain Maintenance as You Age.

These educational activities have been approved for a total of 2 general hours of continuing education credit by the LSU School of Social Work as authorized by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners.

The LSU Healthy Aging Research Center (HARC) impacts positively the health of vulnerable older adults through interdisciplinary applied research: to improve the health, wellbeing, and independence of older adults and their caregivers. We focus on physiological, psychological, behavioral, social, and environmental processes involved in aging. We engage with the larger community in conversations about healthy aging, cognitive aging, and early detection and diagnosis of dementia and supports for people with dementia and their caregivers.
