LSU First-Generation Students To Study Abroad This Summer At The University of Ghana

LSU’s Office of Global Engagement, in collaboration with the University of Ghana, has developed a fully funded five-week summer study abroad program in Accra. This program is tailored specifically for first-generation students, offering a transformative opportunity to engage in global learning in one of West Africa’s culturally rich and historically significant countries.

This interdisciplinary, university-wide program will provide students with the opportunity to earn academic credit while exploring the vibrant and diverse regions of Ghana. With the support of LSU’s senior leadership, first-generation freshmen and sophomores from each academic college will be selected to participate. While in Ghana, students will be enrolled in African-centered academic courses that incorporate interactive learning, encouraging them to broaden their global perspective and develop a deeper understanding of global challenges. These courses will highlight the history, culture, and socio-political landscape of Ghana, where students will engage in thought-provoking discussions that extend their classroom experiences into real-world contexts.

Beyond academic enrichment, students will be offered the opportunity to participate in weekly activities and weekend excursions to various historical, cultural, and natural landmarks across the country. These experiences are designed to meaningfully introduce students to Ghanaian life, where they may develop deeper insight and appreciation for the country and culture.

Moreover, the program will integrate service-learning projects throughout the 5 weeks, allowing students to give back to the local community. Incorporating meaningful service experiences encourages participants to reflect on their social responsibility and engage in transformative work, where they may return to the U.S. with a mindset of furthering their participation in community service.
