LSU Announces the Inaugural Neuroscience Symposium: Bringing Minds Together

BATON ROUGE –The Baton Rouge Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience Baton Rouge Chapter (SfN BTR) presents the inaugural “Neuroscience Symposium: Bringing Minds Together.”  The event will take place Friday, March 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at Pennington Biomedical Research Conference Center, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

This symposium is advancing the mission of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) by bringing scientists of diverse backgrounds together with the overall goal to advance the understanding of the brain and the nervous system by integrating research from all associated scientific fields focused on biological organization in general, while encouraging translational research which applies knowledge gained by this research to develop improved disease treatments and/or cures.

The agenda includes presentations from Louisiana State University, LSU Health Sciences Center, and Pennington Biomedical Research Center as well as a Poster Session. The keynote will be given by Nicolas G. Bazan, MD, PhD, Boyd Professor, Director, Neuroscience Center of Excellence, Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA and is titled: “Uncovering principles to sustain neurons’ long lives: signaling redundancy and resiliency at the onset of neurodegenerative disease.”

“As the flagship for Louisiana, we are committed to Scholarship First. Being active in the Society for Neuroscience chapter, we are supporting the mission to advance our understanding of the brain and nervous system,” said Alexander Murashov, PhD, President of SfN BTR and Department Head, LSU Comparative Biomedical Sciences.

Arend Van Gemmert, PhD, Treasurer for SfN BTR and Associate Dean of the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education added “We are bringing leaders in neuroscience together showcasing the breadth of our scientific community who are focused on improving lives through basic, behavioral, and translational neuroscience research.”

The symposium features interdisciplinary, multi-institutional perspectives and research on diverse topics such as neural correlates of substance abuse, social interaction and fear, memory, vision, and more. The collaboration between LSU institutions demonstrates commitment to LSU's Scholarship First Agenda, focused on creating solutions essential to the future of agriculture, biotechnology, the coast, defense, and energy.
