The LSU-led Future Use of Energy in Louisiana (FUEL) partnership received a $160 million NSF award to develop a sustainable, innovative energy ecosystem in Louisiana to create solutions for energy challenges, create jobs, and train the world’s energy workforce. These first-ever NSF Regional Innovation Engines represent one of the nation's largest broad investments in place-based research and development. Louisiana has a unique opportunity to use science and technology leadership to drive regional economic growth. The FUEL team includes technical and community colleges, universities, state agencies, and private energy companies to develop the workforce and technologies to support Louisiana’s energy industries. FUEL will focus on energy transition and decarbonization of Louisiana’s industrial corridor.
Joshua Ellis, PhD, Associate Professor of Science/STEM Education in the Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education, is a member of an LSU faculty team that has been awarded a $1,187,387 grant from the National Science Foundation for the preparation of future STEM teachers.
The LSU School of Kinesiology is proud to bring together research and outreach from its wide range of disciplines to enhance the opportunities for girls and women to succeed in sports as players, coaches and officials as well as supporting women’s health across the lifespan. To that end, the school is announcing two new partnerships that will further this important work on a national and global scale – The Power to Play. and The Women’s Coaching Association.
In collaboration with colleagues from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard (Dr. Vladimir Ivkovic and Ms. JoAnna Pollonais), Guillaume Spielmann, PhD, Associate Professor in the LSU School of Kinesiology and Heather Quiriarte, research manager in the LSU School of Kinesiology, examined the effects of microgravity on brain blood flow and biomarkers of immune function and stress in Axiom Mission 3 backup and Turkish Space Agency astronaut Tuva Atasever during a suborbital flight on June 8 conducted by Axiom Space and Virgin Galactic.
The LSU School of Leadership & Human Resource Development (SHLRD) proudly announced Tyree Mitchell, PhD, was a member of one of five research teams awarded a prestigious grant from the Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The grant for $855,760, which he will serve as co-PI, aims to support projects focused on enhancing safety culture and safety management systems (SMS) in the offshore energy industry.
James Stampley, PhD was selected to participate in the SEC Emerging Scholars Program. The program is intended to serve as a pathway and source of mentorship for historically underrepresented graduate students and postdoctoral scholars across the Southeastern Conference to prepare them for tenured faculty positions.

LSU Kinesiology’s Liz Heintz is determined to #geauxchangelives through her dedication to saving lives. Heintz, currently a PhD Candidate in Kinesiology at LSU and in the Integrated Physiology and Molecular Medicine Lab at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, was recently approved for funding for a NIH F31 Predoctoral Fellowship. This is the first time a student from LSU Kinesiology has been awarded an F31.
Our students strive to #GeauxChangeLives, and that’s exactly how Maya Gunaldo, LSU CHSE junior, spent her spring break. Gunaldo, a Leadership & Human Resource Development major, was one of 10 LSU students selected to travel to Ghana with LSU’s Global Ambassadors Program (GAP).

Senlin Chen Awarded LDH Grant to Address Health Equity
Senlin Chen, PhD has been awarded a research grant from the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) to study the behavioral and social determinants of health in Medicaid-eligible children. The research project is a joint effort of LSU, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC), and Louisiana Healthcare Connections (LHCC). In addition to Chen, the team includes Drs. Fahui Wang, Amanda E. Staiano, Gang Hu, and Stewart Gordon, as well as multiple graduate and undergraduate students from LSU.

Tyree Mitchell, PhD, was a member of one of five research teams awarded a prestigious $855,760 grant from the Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The grant aims to support projects focused on enhancing safety culture and safety management systems (SMS) in the offshore energy industry. The primary objective of this project is to improve the implementation of Stop work authority, Ultimate work authority, Reporting unsafe conditions, and Employee participation (SURE) programs within the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s Safety and Environmental Management System.
Ed Benoit Receives the ALISE Excellence in Teaching Award
Edward Benoit, Associate Professor and Associate Director of the School of Information Studies, was recognized by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) as the 2023 senior faculty recipient of the ALISE Excellence in Teaching Award. The Award recognizes excellence in educating the next generation of library and information professionals. Dr. Benoit’s nomination highlighted his student-centered approach to teaching, the development of new programs and partnerships, his role as a mentor to current students and alumni, his integration of theory, practice and research in the classroom, and his work pushing archival pedagogy forward.
Jennifer Qian Named to International Data Policy Committee
Jennifer Qian, EdD, Associate Professor of Learning Analytics and Educational Technology, and program lead of the Master's and Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology at the LSU Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education (SOE), was selected as a distinguished member of the International Data Policy Committee (IDPC) within the International Science Council's Committee on Data (CODATA).

The LSU Social Research & Evaluation Center (SREC) in the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education has been named a Louisiana Board of Regents Center of Research Excellence. SREC is the second Center of Research Excellence at Louisiana State University A&M and the only center focused on evaluating and researching social issues affecting our communities.

LSU alumna, Janis Pardue Hill, PhD, a retired university professor and lifelong educator, has recently published a memoir about her father’s journey as a prisoner of war on the Bataan Death March that occurred during World War II. In Telling His Story: POW #1000,
LSU has named Kinesiology alumna Courtney Phillips, former Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, to the position of Vice President of Health Affairs and Chief Health Officer. Phillips will work closely with university leadership across the LSU system as well as with healthcare partners.
School of Information Studies Alumna Nicollette Davis has been named to the 2024 Cohort of Movers & Shakers by Library Journal. Movers & Shakers is a worldwide award given to library professionals who innovate and help make their library community a better place. Davis was nominated for her advocacy work in the Baton Rouge area.
D-D Breaux, current chair of the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education Dean's Advisory Council, is the longest tenured coach of any sport in SEC history. Breaux built the LSU women's gymnastics program into a national powerhouse.
School of Information Studies alumna, Mackenzie Roberts Beasley (MLIS, 2018), found herself at the center of an amazing archival discovery - the film shows the February 22, 1898 Rex Parade, as highlighted by The New York Times’ feature article.
