Stephenson Department of Entrepreneurship & Information Systems PhD Candidate Harsh Parekh recently received multiple recognitions for his contributions to the Association for Information Systems (AIS) at the 2023 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) conference held in India in December 2023.

During the conference’s pre-ICIS Workshop on Information Systems Security and Privacy (WISP), Parekh was awarded the Outstanding Reviewer Award, which recognizes a doctoral student for exceptional peer-review contributions throughout the workshop. He was also awarded runner-up for the Outstanding Student Paper Award in recognition of his research paper titled "Escaping the Echo: Understanding the Impact of Social Media on Overconcentration of Emerging Technology's Security Threats," presented at the workshop. The AIS Special Interest Group on Information Security and Privacy (SIGSEC) hosted the workshop, which provides a platform for scholars, practitioners, and doctoral students interested in information security and privacy to exchange ideas and foster collaboration within the SIGSEC community.

At the 2023 ICIS conference, Parekh was presented with three more prestigious recognitions. He was awarded the 2023 AIS-DSC Volunteer Award, honoring the dedicated service of doctoral students to the Association of Information Systems-Doctoral Student College. Parekh’s volunteering efforts for the year included facilitating mentoring events, social media, and website communication, and organizing conference events to enhance the career development of IS doctoral students. This is the second consecutive year he was honored with this award.

In addition, Parekh received the 2023 Doctoral Student Service Award, recognizing his volunteer contributions toward the success of AIS conferences, journals, and programs. For the past three years, Parekh has been both an active volunteer and a dedicated member of the Association of Information Systems-Doctoral Student College. He served in various positions, including website and social media coordinator, region one coordinator, and ICIS DSC conference co-chair. Parekh also served as a reviewer for various conferences and supported the development of MISQ's Insider Blogs.

Lastly, Parekh was named one of the top three finalists in the conference’s Paper-a-thon. This category recognizes short papers in development to be published as ICIS proceedings.

“ I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support received through my department in attending the ICIS conference—an enriching experience that turbocharged my PhD journey. It was a privilege to present my research and be recognized at this prestigious platform by peers and senior scholars. Considering my commitment to a future academic career, the rich networks forged during this conference will be instrumental for the advancement of my scholarly pursuits ahead, said Parekh. ”

During their time at LSU, PhD candidates focusing in information systems immediately begin working with publishing faculty to develop into top-tier researchers. This built-in mentorship allows candidates to make contributions to business and society through their development and application of new knowledge, all while in the program. In addition to a host of other benefits, they are also offered the opportunity for conference travel to present research and expand their professional networks.
