Undergraduate Scholarship Competitions

The Department of Geography and Anthropology provides the following opportunities for undergraduate scholarships.

Prof. Carville Earle Memorial Geography Undergraduate Scholarship

The Prof. Carville Earle Memorial Geography Undergraduate Scholarship awards $500 cash for the best 1500-word essay on a topic of geographical relevance. Submissions may be modified from manuscripts submitted in fulfillment of coursework. All LSU undergraduate Geography majors and minors are eligible.

The submission deadline is December 31 of each calendar year for papers from that calendar year (i.e., Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters). Students must include their name, major (minor, if any), and LSU email on the first page of their paper. Students must include a 150-200 word summary of the paper along with a photo of the student for use on the dept web page or other uses such as giving to the donors or college. Papers should be uploaded as a PDF file. Papers will be reviewed by the Research and Scholarship Committee of the Department of Geography and Anthropology, who will select awardees. Awards will be presented at an award ceremony in the Department of Geography and Anthropology each spring semester, including a certificate suitable for framing.

Anthropology Undergraduate Scholarship

The Anthropology Undergraduate Scholarship awards $500 cash for the best 1500-word essay on a topic of anthropological relevance. Submissions may be modified from manuscripts submitted in fulfillment of coursework. All LSU undergraduate Anthropology majors and minors are eligible.

Prof. Phil Larimore Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

The Prof. Phil Larimore Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship awards $500 cash for an essay on a topic of geographical or anthropological relevance. Submissions may be modified from manuscripts submitted in fulfillment of coursework. All LSU undergraduate Anthropology majors and minors in geography or anthropology are eligible. The winning paper will be selected by the Research and Scholarship Committee from among the papers submitted for the Prof. Carville Earle Memorial Geography Undergraduate Scholarship and Anthropology Undergraduate Scholarship.

William G. McIntire Scholarship

The William G. McIntire Scholarship gives a cash award for a 1500-word essay on a topic of geographical or anthropological relevance. Submissions may be modified from manuscripts submitted in fulfillment of coursework. Scholarship will be awarded to full time students who have attained junior status at LSU and A&M College. Preference will be given to those students with an expressed interest in coastal research. The winning paper will be selected by the Research and Scholarship Committee from among the papers submitted for the Prof. Carville Earle Memorial Geography Undergraduate Scholarship and Anthropology Undergraduate Scholarship.
