PhD student Charlotte Jones to speak at international conference
In November, PhD student Charlotte Jones will speak at the international conference Exhibiting Animals: Curatorial Strategies and Narratives at the University of Warsaw in Poland. The “Exhibiting Animals” project consists of the conference and monographic book on the topic of presenting and representing animals in exhibitions, in various types of museums and cultural institutions. Jones's paper and presentation will discuss a museum exhibit Stomping Grounds: Mules at Work in Southeast Louisiana that she curated for the 1811 Kid Ory Historic House in LaPlace, LA. Jones will reexamine the defining constructs of exhibition through the intersection of place, aesthetics, and social attitudes concerning the presence of a 'vacationing' mule at the museum, and the working mules in the French Quarter of New Orleans, which is often perceived as a "living museum."
