LSU’s 2024 Scholarship First Bus Tour: Day 3 Dispatch from President Tate

If Day 3 of the Scholarship First Bus Tour had a theme, it would be gumbo and family. The weather had a hint of chill, signaling the start of gumbo season.
We embraced the season by visiting Mike and Sandy Davis at Conrad Rice Mill, America’s oldest rice mill, and talked rice science with expert Adam Famoso of the LSU AgCenter.
Our day continued with a lunch stop at Cane River Pecan Pie Bar in New Iberia, where owner Jady Regard shared insights about the pecan industry while we enjoyed a delicious chicken and sausage gumbo.

We then ventured to Avery Island, home of Tabasco, which started as a small family enterprise and has grown to an international brand. This visit sparked thoughts about how brands like Tabasco and LSU represent Louisiana culture globally.

We concluded our day at Danos, a company that began with two brothers-in-law and a boat but grew into a national corporation. Conversations with Hank Danos revealed the importance of family, as we talked about the business with the next generation of Danos leaders there beside us.

Every stop centered on family and every conversation included gumbo and science. It wasn’t planned that way; it just happened, and that’s when you know it is engrained in the culture.
