UCFY Parent Newsletter May 2021
The University College Center for Freshman Year (UCFY) is the academic unit for most new freshmen and some transfer and re-entry students. Our mission is to prepare incoming students for success at LSU and to help define their academic and career goals. Students typically exit the Center at the conclusion of the freshman year and enter one of the degree-granting senior colleges at LSU. Some students may be granted additional time for enrollment if they have not yet declared a major.

Students planning to enroll at another college or university this summer with the intention of transferring credit back to LSU, should be mindful of a few policies and procedures that may affect summer school enrollment at another institution. Due to varying residency and senior college academic requirements, students should consult with their college counselor prior to earning credit from other institutions. Students earning an “F” grade in an LSU course CANNOT repeat that course at another institution outside of the LSU system. Many courses at other institutions have been evaluated for LSU equivalents. Students can find these equivalents from a database entitled “Tiger Transfer Tables” maintained by the LSU Office of Admissions. This can be found at . If you cannot find a course in the Tiger Transfer Tables, you can request a transfer course evaluation at lsu.edu/evaluation.
Additional information about “how credit transfers to LSU” can be found at LSU transfer credit information. Upon completion of summer school enrollment, students must have the transfer institution send an official transcript to LSU’s Office of Admissions. Students with questions about summer school transfer credits or advising, may contact a UCFY counselor for assistance by emailing ucfy@lsu.edu or by scheduling an appointment on the Navigate Student App.
LSU 2021 Summer Courses:
Summer courses cover the same information and are taught by the same professors as those held during the fall and spring semesters. As a response to the continued impact of COVID-19 and to increase affordability for students taking summer classes, LSU is offering a 15 percent discount on tuition and fees for summer courses. This discount applies to in-state and out-of-state students. These discounts don't apply LSU Online fully online programs. Summer students also receive the same quality of advising and support as fall and spring students.

Taking Courses Elsewhere this Summer?
If planning to take courses at another institution this summer, there are some important things to know before enrolling.
For example...Did you know?
- Your senior college may require pre-approval of your course at another institution in order for you to receive credit?
- You must repeat an ‘F’ course in the LSU system for the credit to apply towards your LSU degree?
- LSU’s grade exclusion policy only applies at LSU?
Please review Important Information on Taking Courses at another Institution to ensure to receive credit for any courses taken outside of LSU. Just because a class is offered at another University, does not mean it will automatically apply toward your LSU degree.
