SCIENCE IN THE SCHOLARSHIP FIRST AGENDA

Energy

Energy is central to Louisiana’s economy, and Louisiana is central to the nation’s energy supply. College of Science researchers are uncovering ways to harness and create cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy and to improve energy efficiency, transmission, and storage. Researchers like David Vinyard are examining ways to optimize photosynthesis for more efficient food and fuel production and Matthew Chambers is exploring sustainable ways to help the chemical industry save energy and reduce waste. And energy researchers are using LSU’s Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), the only state-funded synchrotron facility in the U.S., to study green methods of energy generation. LSU faculty are using CAMD to study the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the environment and researchers in LSU’s Superfund Research Program are using the center to study the toxins produced during combustion that can be inhaled and transferred from the lungs to other internal organs and cause widespread damage.
