LSU President William F. Tate IV and LSU’s Boyd Professors celebrated three faculty members during the Presidential Laurel recognition ceremony on Oct. 8.

This event honors the exceptional academic, creative, and research accomplishments of faculty over the last academic year. This award is very selective, with a goal of highlighting the exceptional stature of our faculty in their respective fields while celebrating success and encouraging aspiration among peers.

Potential honorees are considered by nomination only, with final selection made via vote by the body of Boyd Professors, the highest and most prestigious academic rank at LSU, with highest consideration placed on the merit of selectivity and exclusivity of the nominee’s accomplishments.

The following faculty were honored this year:

  • Jack Hamilton, former Provost and former dean of the Manship School, received the Sidney Kobre Award for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism – the American Journalism Historians Association's highest honor. Dr. Hamilton's recognition via this award puts him among the very top scholars of journalism history.
  • Kam-Biu Liu, George W. Barineau III Professor in the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences, received the Lifetime Achievement Award is for the American Association of Geographers’ Climate Specialty Group. This award is only given to members who have made substantial contributions to climatology and geography. He is known as the “Father of Paleotempestology.”
  • Nina Lam, Professor & Abraham Distinguished Professor of Louisiana Environmental Studies, received the Research Award from the University Consortium on Geographic Information Science. This award is given to one individual worldwide who has made a particularly outstanding research contribution to geographic information science. Dr. Lam was selected because of her innovative and impactful work regarding community resilience.
