LSU Vet Med reveals food animal service area renovation

July 11, 2024

On July 10, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine formally revealed its spectacular new Food Animal Service area in the large animal hospital attached to the LSU Vet Med building during a ceremony celebrating this state-of-the-art facility.

This $4.125 million renovation began in October 2022. More than 9,000 square feet of space was renovated, and another 3,875 square feet were added.

Oliver Garden, BVetMed, PhD, DACVIM DECVIM-CA, LSU Vet Med dean, welcome special guests, including Commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry Mike Strain, DVM (LSU 1983), and members of the Louisiana legislature. Dr. Strain reminisced about the brand-new facilities at LSU Vet Med when he began his veterinary education; he remarked about how LSU Vet Med is more than a place; it’s a community of knowledge and fellowship. Following remarks, guests were given a tour of the new space by Professor Matt Welborn (LSU 1987), Associate Professor Clare Scully, and Assistant Professor David Martinez.

Dr. Garden remarked, “At LSU Vet Med, we are committed to advancing veterinary medicine and enhancing animal health. The recent extensive renovations to our food animal hospital reflect our dedication to providing state-of-the-art care for food-producing animals, thereby supporting our strong animal agricultural industry and food security in our state. These transformative improvements will not only benefit our patients and clients but enrich the educational experience for our students as we build a pipeline of food animal veterinarians to serve Louisiana and the south-east. We are very excited about the opportunities these enhancements bring and look forward to continuing to deliver on our vision of bettering lives through education, public service, and discovery for Louisiana and beyond.”

The LSU Vet Med Food Animal Service sees approximately 4,000 animals each year and provides comprehensive medical, surgical, and reproductive care for animals in our hospital, as well as herd health and individual care for animals on the farm. Our team of veterinarians, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, and veterinary students provide exceptional care for all animals.
