Students participate in the Freshman Leadership Experience during their orientation week. This focuses on team building and allows them to get to know each other, as well as members of faculty, staff, and other classes, before beginning their courses.

It is with great excitement that the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine welcomes the incoming Class of 2028. This year’s class was one of the most competitive application pools we have seen in recent years. With more than 2,000 applicants, 176 students were admitted into the Class of 2028.

The average GPA for admitted students for the Class of 2027 was 3.55. Of the 176 students admitted, 88 are Louisiana residents, 20 are from Arkansas, 19 are from Puerto Rico, and 49 are from other states; 27 states are represented. The average age is 24 with a range of 20 to 54. Forty-seven (47) are first generation college students, and 47 (27 percent) are members of under-represented minorities. Thirty-five (20 percent) are male, and 141 (80 percent) are female.

Seventy-two (72) come from rural areas, and 65 (37 percent) have an interest in large animal medicine (caring for horses and/or farm animals). Fifteen (15) students are from 3+1 programs with 12 attending LSU and three attending Louisiana Tech. 3+1 programs allow students to complete their BS degree in specific majors upon the completion of the first year of veterinary school

The members of this class have a variety of different backgrounds: One of our new students recently completed her Ph.D. Four are members of the reserves or national guard, and two are military veterans. Other students come to LSU Vet Med from the poultry industry, human medicine, horse training, microbiology, retail, and more. Welcome, Class of 2028!
