With hurricane season upon us, it's crucial for pet owners to be prepared for potential emergencies. When faced with the need to evacuate, ensuring the safety and well-being of your pets should be a top priority.

With hurricane season upon us, horse owners should take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of their animals. Here are some tips from the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART - lsart.org), the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (ldaf.state.la.us), and the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine (lsu.edu/vetmed) for effectively preparing horse owners in areas prone to hurricane damage.

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine conferred four advanced degrees on May 24, 2024.

As the temperatures rise, so does the activity of our slithery neighbors. Between April and October, venomous snakes are notably more active, increasing the risk of snake bites, especially for our curious pets.

As temperatures soar and the hot summer months approach, it's crucial to prioritize the safety of your beloved pets. Heatstroke can have devastating consequences, including organ failure and even death. Take proactive measures to safeguard your pets and ensure they stay safe throughout the summer season.

The Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine proudly celebrated its 48th annual Veterinary Medicine Commencement on Friday, May 17, conferring 110 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. The ceremony, presided over by Oliver A. Garden, BvetMed, PhD, DACVIM, DECVIM-CA, dean of the school, was graced by the presence of esteemed individuals, including former LSU Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri as the commencement speaker.

A new $150,000 investment from national nonprofit Petco Love, in partnership with Blue Buffalo, supports client hardship cases for pet cancer patients at LSU Vet Med. The grant brings their total in cancer care support to $600,000 since 2019.

As the 2024 hurricane season approached, LSU Vet Med held its annual weeklong Disaster Training and Response Boot Camp with LSART. This program provides training for animal safety in disaster situations and teaches core skills including evacuation procedures, large animal rescue, emergency management, shelter operations, slack water rescue, biosecurity, planning, and safety.

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine opens the 30th Annual International Exhibition on Animals in Art with an opening reception on May 11, 2024, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the LSU Vet Med Library. The show runs through June 2. The exhibition is free and open to the public every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

More than 170 people participated in the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine 27th Annual Hill's Great Rover Road Run on Sunday, April 21. ! In addition, the Student American Veterinary Medicine Association (SAVMA) hosted a dog wash after the Great Rover Road Run and raised more than $1,200 for student activities.

Join us on Monday, April 29, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Library for "An Evening of Poetry" to culminate Dr. Brandon Kilbourne's artist residency. This public literary reading is free and open to the public. Kilbourne will read poems composed during the residency and other previously published work. It will also include a moderated discussion with Kilbourne and LSU Vet Med community members who interacted with the artist in residence. Dr. Julie Kane, Louisiana poet laureate from 2011-13, will attend.

There could be potential hazards lurking in your yard. Among the flora often included in Louisiana landscapes are toxic plants, such as the sago palm, as well as other popular plants like hydrangea, wisteria, foxglove, and more.
