Our lab focuses on cutting-edge research, with a special emphasis developing AI-driven diagnostic tools, pioneering AI in veterinary dermatology, and skin microbiome in health and disease.
Research
The NAVDLab is a pioneer in applied artificial intelligence in veterinary dermatology/otology. We develop AI algorithms that are able to diagnose skin or ear lesions, that they might be widely used in the future to improve pet welfare.
We also have an active role in the study of atopic skin diseases, the skin bacterial microbiome and heavy metal exposure in dogs.

Neoklis Apostolopoulos
Dr. Apostolopoulos earned his veterinary degree in 2011 from the University of Thessaly in Greece. He then spent nine years in Germany, where he completed a rotating internship, a residency, and postgraduate research focused on the canine cutaneous microbiota. From 2021 to 2024, he served as an assistant professor of veterinary dermatology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since April 2024, he has been a tenure-track assistant professor at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on applied artificial intelligence in veterinary dermatology and otology, as well as the canine skin microbiome. Clinically, his interests encompass all aspects of dermatology, allergology, and otology, with extensive experience in CO2 laser surgery and fluorescence photobiomodulation treatment of skin diseases.

At NAVDLab, our dedication to understanding skin and ear diseases in pets, especially
allergies, fuels our research to uncover underlying mechanisms, assess risk factors,
and improve diagnosis and treatment.
We’re playing an active role in studying the skin microbiome of dogs in health and
allergy.
NAVDLab is the world’s first veterinary dermatology/otology lab, developing AI models capable of diagnosing skin lesions on paws and in ear canals of pets. Our mission is to develop clinically relevant AI tools created by clinicians for clinicians.
We continue to innovate, striving to improve diagnostics which ultimately may enhance the welfare of pets, their families, and veterinarians, especially in underserved areas. Additionally, these tools can be utilized by veterinary universities to enhance the education and training of future veterinarians.
