LSU Graduate Student Receives British Council's Global UK Alumni Award for Cultural, Creative Contributions
October 15, 2024
BATON ROUGE–LSU Manship School of Mass Communication first-year doctoral student Saad Zuberi, a distinguished multimedia journalist and documentary filmmaker, has been honored with the British Council's prestigious Global UK Alumni Award 2024 in the category of Culture and Creativity.
This global accolade follows his national win in March and recognizes his significant contributions to cultural discourse through his impactful journalism and documentary work. Zuberi's work, which has been showcased on prominent platforms such as the BBC, Vice, and Al Jazeera, has fostered social awareness and driven policy reforms on human rights and social justice issues.
The award, which was announced earlier this month, celebrates Zuberi’s decade-long career in human-interest storytelling, highlighting his dedication to amplifying marginalized voices. His films have garnered international recognition, with nominations for esteemed honors such as the Emmy and International Documentary Association Awards.
In recognition of this achievement, Zuberi has been invited to the formal award ceremony in London later this year.
Reflecting on his work, Zuberi said, "I’ve always been far more interested in understanding
what happens after the news cycle ends and the news cameras are turned off, because
that is when you really begin to see how individuals and communities are impacted
in the aftermath of events that dominate headlines."
Manship School Ph.D. student Zuberi will continue to explore the intersection of international
journalism, political communication and public interest issues. He added, "It’s not
easy work—you face all sorts of hurdles and backlash for highlighting everything that
is wrong with society, but it’s incredibly important because that is how you uncover
uncomfortable truths and give voice to those who don’t have one."
