We Stand for Justice
April 21, 2021
Yesterday afternoon, the nation let out a collective sigh of relief as we learned of the three guilty verdicts against the police officer who mercilessly killed George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Mr. Floyd's murder was recorded and broadcast across the globe, becoming a symbol of racial injustice and highlighting racial violence in its most blatant form. The video acted as a catalyst for one of the largest social movements in U. S. history. The rallying cries for social justice and accountability for police officers responsible for and complicit in the killings of Black people resounded worldwide. Historic numbers of people throughout the country and the world protested in hopes of turning the tides of justice. Albeit a year later, accountability has prevailed. Yet, even in the midst of this verdict, we know there is still much work to be done, as evidenced by the news coming from Ohio and North Carolina over the last 24 hours.
As a community, the Manship School resolves to work collectively to ensure that there is true justice for all. We reflect on this moment in history yet remember that injustice persists, and the work continues. We commit to fighting the systemic racism that continues to unfairly shape and seeks to devalue the lives of African American people throughout this country. We vow to center racial justice as we move towards a more equitable and just society.
