Cadet Groups and Organizations
Arnold Air Society
The Arnold Air Society is a professional and honorary service organization that promotes
the importance of aerospace power. It is made up of cadets from various U.S. Air Force
officer candidate training programs.
The Arnold Air Society squadron at LSU’s AFROTC Detachment 310 is named after Captain
Frank S. Hagan, who was born on September 4, 1925, in Spartanburg, South Carolina,
and later attended LSU. Captain Hagan flew 70 missions during the Korean War, earning
the Distinguished Flying Cross and five Air Medals. After returning to the U.S. in
1951, he served as a flight instructor but tragically died in a mid-air collision.
A tombstone in his memory is placed at the National Cemetery in Baton Rouge. The Frank
S. Hagan Squadron at LSU is known for its rich traditions and strong bonds among members
that last beyond commissioning and active duty.

Silver WINGS
SW is a national, co-ed, professional organization dedicated to creating proactive,
knowledgeable, and effective civic leaders through community service and education
about national defense.
Silver Wings (formally known as Angel Flight) is one of the largest and most welll-known
organizations at Louisiana State University. The Captain Frank S. Hagan Chapter of
Silver Wings was founded in 1958 at LSU.
Perishing Rifles
The National Society of Pershing Rifles is a military-oriented, national honor society.
In 1891, then-Lieutenant John J. Pershing, as Professor of Military Science at the
University of Nebraska, founded "Company A" to boost ROTC morale. This group became
the "Varsity Rifles" in 1893 and was renamed "Pershing Rifles" in 1894 to honor Pershing.
At LSU, Pershing Rifles Company D-17 serves as the rifle drill team and color guard,
performing at events like football games and cadet activities. Its missions are to
develop officers for the Army, Navy, and Air Force; promote ROTC unity; uphold military
traditions; and offer civilians a military experience without formal commitment.

Air Force Association
The Air Force Association is an independent , nonprofit, professional militart and
aerospace education association that promotes American aerospace power.
The Major General Oris B. Johnson Chapter of the AFA was initially chartered as the
Baton Rouge Chapter #156 in 1950 but nearly disbanded shortly after. In 1993, it refocused
on supporting LSU cadets, which remains its mission today. The chapter hosted the
state convention in 1995, engaged with the Louisiana Veteran's War Home, and grew
its membership. Recognized with numerous awards from the Air Force Association, the
chapter provides annual scholarships to LSU students and supports cadet activities
through funding and volunteer hours, consistently aiding cadets in their development
and engagement with the community..
