LSU Political Science Professor Receives 2025 Manning Dauer Award from the Southern Political Science Association

Dr. James C. Garand, 2025 Manning Dauer Award Recipient and Emogene Pliner Distinguished Professor of Political Science

James C. Garand, the Emogene Pliner Distinguished Professor of Political Science in the LSU Department of Political Science, is the recipient of the 2025 Manning Dauer Award from the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA).
The Manning Dauer Award is a prestigious career award that recognizes “exceptional
contributions to the political science profession.” Garand joins a list of prominent
scholars and leaders in the political science discipline who have been recipients
of the Dauer Award.
Garand has published more than 90 articles in scholarly journals over the course of
his career, and has received numerous awards for his research and teaching work. In
2023 the SPSA established and endowed the James C. Garand Outstanding Mentor Award,
and Professor Garand is also a recipient of the 2023 Excellence in Mentoring Award
from the Public Policy Section of the American Political Science Association.
He is an LSU Distinguished Research Master (2006), an LSU Rainmaker (2009), former
President of the Southern Political Science Association (2004), former President of
the State Politics Section of the American Political Science Association (1994-1995),
and the recipient of several teaching awards at LSU. He is former editor of American
Politics Research, one of the leading subfield journals in American politics, and
he has served on the editorial boards for several prominent political science journals.
He has mentored numerous students over the course of his career, including more than
35 former students who currently hold faculty and/or administrative appointments at
colleges and universities around the country.
