Art & Wellness Series

The LSU Hilltop Arboretum Art & Wellness Series invites the community to experience the landscape as both classroom and creative space. Through sensory-based and participatory programs, visitors engage the arboretum by slowing down, observing seasonal change, and interacting directly with the natural environment. By connecting horticulture, landscape design, and human experience, the series expands Hilltop’s role as a living laboratory while offering accessible opportunities for reflection, creativity, and personal wellbeing.

person walking on bridgeForest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, originated in Japan as a practice of intentionally slowing down and engaging the senses in a natural setting. Rather than hiking for distance or exercise, participants are invited to notice light through leaves, birdsong, shifting air, textures, and seasonal change - allowing the nervous system to settle and attention to reset.

Scott Courtright, ISA Certified Arborist and owner of Trinity Tree Consultants and Louisiana Tree Service, will guide this small-group experience beginning at the open-air pavilion. After a brief orientation, participants will move slowly along the arboretum trails with periodic pauses for observation, quiet reflection, and optional journaling. This program is designed for anyone seeking calm, focus, or a deeper connection to the landscape. No prior experience is needed.

Participants are encouraged to bring a small journal and pen/pencil. Please dress for outdoor conditions and bring water. Pre-registration required. Registration: $20 or $10 for students.
