Peggy Coates headshotPeggy Davis Coates is a native of South Louisiana and an avid gardener. She served as the Executive Director of the LSU Hilltop Arboretum from 2007 to 2021. Working in concert with the Friends of Hilltop Arboretum and it’s amazing core of volunteers, the arboretum was developed into a regional environmental destination making a substantial impact on the greater Baton Rouge area through programs, events, and activities for gardeners of all ages. Peggy received her Master’s Degree of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University and Master’s of Science Degree in Urban Forestry from Southern University.

In retirement, Peggy continues to pursue her interest in the local ecology, botany, native plant gardening, and botanical art. She completed the Master Naturalist of Greater Baton Rouge Program in 2022 and coordinates two Plant ID Workshops annually for the organization. She is a volunteer for the Louisiana Native Plant Society, certifying gardens for their Louisiana Certified Habitat Program, and making presentations to gardening organizations to promote the program and native plant gardening.  To increase the diversity of native plants in her own garden, she enjoys growing them from seed and sharing the seedlings with others.
