Shirin-Yoku, as it is called in Japan, literally translates to Forest Bathing. When we immerse ourselves into the forest and experience its sights, sounds, aromas and textures, we can often experience a positive benefit for our mind, body, and spirit. Singing birds, sunlight filtering through the leaves, squirrels searching for acorns, leaves blowing in the wind, and frogs bellowing are all aspects of nature that can relax and calm the soul. In these difficult times, we all could use a new approach to calmness and relaxation. Trees filter the air, produce oxygen, and emit tiny amounts of chemicals. The body is physically “healed” by the by-products of trees.
Scott Courtright, Arborist and owner of Trinity Trees, will lead the therapeutic session that will begin under the open-air pavilion. After a brief orientation, the group will traverse the trails, with stops and social distancing, to focus individually on the forest, to allow nature to nurture, and to observe the offerings of the landscape. As the leader of the session, Scott will position individuals in strategic locations that will encourage a connection with the natural settings of the Arboretum. Participants will be encouraged to journal, meditate, internally connect, and shed stress and anxiety that permeate all our bodies, minds, and spirits. We ask that you bring a small pocket journal notebook, and pencil or ink pen.
The tour is designed to maintain appropriate social distancing between participants. Scott will use a wireless headset transmitter, and each participant will be given a headset to use during the tour.
