On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform exploded 40 miles off the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico, and LSU professors in the College of the Coast & Environment leapt to action to assess its wide-ranging environmental impacts. Approximately 210 million gallons of oil was released into the environment over several months. LSU’s collective research expertise ranges from the impact of the oil on marsh erosion to tracking community resilience in the aftermath of the disaster. Their findings are still being used today to assist in assessing the thousands of oil spills that occur each year.

Additionally, the college has launched a webpage illustrating the depth and breadth of its 10 years of critical oil spill research and discoveries. Learn more at www.lsu.edu/cce/deepwaterhorizon.
