About the Department of Entomology
The Entomology Department at LSU has a long and distinguished tradition of applied and basic research in the field of entomology. Students from around the world have chosen to study entomology at LSU, and continue to win awards annually at national conferences, such as the Entomological Society of America.
Our Entomology curriculum includes both traditional entomological courses as well as new and innovative topics incorporating a deeper understanding of molecular biology, toxicology, resistance management, and epidemiological tools. Lastly, our extension faculty serve stakeholders from around the state in all aspects of entomology.
Louisiana State Arthropod Museum
The Louisiana State Arthropod Museum (LSAM) is housed on the 5th floor of the Life Sciences Building on the main campus of LSU. It is part of the Department of Entomology and is a component collection of the Louisiana Museum of Natural History. The LSAM contains approximately 1,000,000 specimens of insects and related arthropods.
The Entomology Club at LSU provides its members with a wide range of activities and learning opportunities. We conduct entomology and arthropod related outreach events throughout the State of Louisiana to teach citizens more about the wonders of insects and their importance in our live and the natural world. We also host many fun and exciting events throughout the year including insect collecting trips, tailgates, chili cook offs, pot lucks, and even cricket spitting competitions.
This club provides a space to interact with other students and faculty who are passionate about insects and the environment in a friendly and inclusive manner. You can be involved as much as you want to and everyone is welcome, whether you study entomology or not!
The Entomology Society of America (ESA) has graduate student competitions in the form of the Entomology Games (insect trivia) and Student Debate (Entomology/Science Trend Topics). LSU is fortunate to have a very active Entomology Games team and debate team.
LSU Entomology students compete annually in the two ESA events, and perform well in these efforts. The LSU Entomology department has a dedicated group of students that want to excel and make themselves all they can be, and through their hard work have received numerous awards over the years. Participants in both events improve their entomology knowledge while having fun during preparation.
