The College of the Coast & Environment Congratulates the 2021 Lipsey Scholarships and Awards Recipients

Congratulations to 2021 Lipsey scholarships and awards recipients Danielle Soileau, Gabrielle Carpenter, Megan Arias, and Matt Hiatt. Soileau and Carpenter are graduate students in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences, Arias is a graduate student in the Department of Environmental Sciences, and Hiatt is an assistant professor in Oceanography & Coastal Sciences. Soileau has been awarded the Joseph Lipsey Senior Memorial Scholarship; Carpenter and Arias have been awarded the Richard A. & Joseph Lipsey, Jr. Graduate Student Scholarship Incentive Award; and Hiatt has been awarded the Joseph Lipsey, Jr. & Richard A. Lipsey Excellence in Teaching Award.

For more than thirty years, the Lipsey family has committed to the education of those interested in improving coastal and environmental conditions. In fact, Richard Lipsey is a founding member of the LSU College of the Coast & Environment’s advisory council.

• The Joseph Lipsey Senior Memorial Scholarship was established by the Lipsey family in 1978. The award honors avid sportsman and founder of Steinberg's Sports Center, Joseph Lipsey, Sr. and reflects the family's keen interest in the sustainability and economic development of Louisiana. Recognizing the need to better understand, conserve and make wise use of our state's coastal and marine living resources, the award is given to outstanding graduate students who make the greatest contribution during work in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences. Including Soileau, 38 recipients from the College of the Coast & Environment have earned this scholarship.
• The Richard A. & Joseph Lipsey, Jr. Graduate ​Student Scholarship Incentive Award ​was established in 2011 and honors top-level, incoming graduate students with greater than a 3.0 GPA.​ Including Carpenter and Arias, 22 graduate students from the College of the Coast & Environment have earned this scholarship.
• The Joseph Lipsey, Jr. & Richard A. Lipsey Excellence in Teaching Award was established by the Lipsey family in 1995 and recognizes faculty who excel in teaching, mentoring, professional accomplishments, and contributions to the college. Including Hiatt, 27 recipients from the College of the Coast & Environment have earned this award.
