LSU track and field athlete Jackson Martingayle has been named the Southeastern Conference H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2022-23 academic year. The H. Boyd McWhorter Award is the highest honor earned by a student-athlete in the SEC. Martingayle is the third LSU track and field athlete to receive the award, following in the footsteps of Lisa Gunnarson, who won last year, and Mikael Olander in 1989.

Martingayle has been a member of the LSU track and field and cross-country teams since 2019, and he has excelled in both areas. He holds a 4.08 GPA and will graduate this spring with a degree in natural resource ecology and management. Martingayle has been on the SEC Academic honor roll five times and has earned numerous academic awards, including the Tiger Twelve.

Martingayle, who arrived at LSU as a preferred walk-on, expressed his gratitude for the recognition and credited his hard work over the past few years for his success. The athlete praised his parents, coaches, and professors for supporting him and accommodating his busy schedule. He also thanked the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation and the LSU Foundation for enabling him to take advantage of the opportunities available at LSU without financial stress.

Martingayle was chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from SEC universities and will receive a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. Callie Dickinson of Georgia’s swimming and dive team was named the women’s H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
