Purpose

The Working Group on AI in Research, Economic Development, and Intellectual Property is established to guide and oversee the university's strategic direction in AI research, and the role of AI in research, innovation, intellectual property management, and economic development. The working group will ensure alignment with LSU policies, ethical standards, and community impact considerations.  The work of this working group is vital to positioning the university as a leader in AI research, development, intellectual property, and economic development.

Responsibilities

  1. Create ethical frameworks for responsible AI research, innovation, and commercialization, and the uses of AI in those areas.
  2. Establish policies for interdisciplinary collaboration, intellectual property rights, and industry collaboration as they relate to AI.
  3. Assess Community Impact.  Evaluate the potential impact of AI research at LSU on the local community, broader society, and the environment and recommend strategies to minimize negative effects and maximize positive contributions to society.
  4. Promote Interdisciplinary Research: Encourage collaboration between various academic departments and external partners as it relates to AI. Support the commercialization of AI technologies, ensuring alignment with university values and goals.
  5. Recommend a strategy to Monitor and Report Progress: For example, how should LSU review and assess the progress of AI research, development, and collaboration initiatives? How should LSU report on progress to university leadership, highlighting achievements, challenges, and recommendations.
