Round II Grant Award Announcement

On October 10, the LSU Institute for Energy Innovation presented more than $2.6 million in research funding to more than eight research initiatives across the energy innovation space. In light of this second round of awards, we are dedicating the October newsletter to those projects.

The following are the titles of the funded projects:

1. Developing Hurricane Resilient Offshore Wind Technology for Gulf of Mexico
2. Resilience and Equity in Smart Community-Utility Energy Planning
3. Identification of Underground Hydrogen Storage Sites in Louisiana: Assessing Geographical, Geological, Infrastructural, and Environmental Factors

Assessing CO₂ Geologic Storage Impacts on Louisiana’s Water Resources and Environment Webinar

This webinar provides an update from Dr. Frank Tsai, Chevron professor of Engineering and Director of the Louisiana Water Resources Institute, on his research on the impact of carbon capture and storage in the Lake Maurepas area of Louisiana. The update covers the four aspects of this project:

• Geological Complexity of Lake Maurepas: Prof. Tsai's analysis of the area's geology, including faulting and shale layer continuity, which are critical for CO2 containment.
• CO2 Migration Patterns: Prof. Christopher Kees’ simulation work to predict how CO2 might move through the subsurface environment of Lake Maurepas.
• Baseline CO2 Levels: Prof. Yi-Jun Xu's monitoring of CO2 concentrations in the region's groundwater and surface water to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic sources.
• Ground Movement Monitoring: Prof. Ahmed Abdalla's use of cutting-edge technology to track any changes in ground elevation that could be related to CO2 injection activities in the area.

Industry-LSU Energy Innovation Workshops

The LSU Institute for Energy Innovation hosted an Industry-LSU Energy Innovation Workshop on February 6, 2024, at the Water Campus on the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge. Participants representing industry and academia were welcomed by Director Brad Ives, received a presentation from Dr. Margaret Reams on Environmental Justice and Community Benefit Planning, and heard from industry representatives regarding their energy initiatives.  Participants took part in tabletop discussions, sharing views and identifying research needs surrounding the 2024-I (Phase II) RFP study areas.  Discussion surrounding the research areas was captured in a summary report along with links to more information on LSU IEI’s round two requests for research proposals and a video of the presentations.

The LSU Institute for Energy Innovation hosted a Co-Production Workshop on July 18, 2023, at the Water Campus on the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge. Roughly eighty participants representing industry and academia shared views and identified research needs surrounding carbon capture and sequestration, solar deployment, and environmental justice. Discussion surrounding these research areas was captured in a summary report along with links to more information on LSU IEI’s round one of requests for synthesis and experimental research proposals and a video recap of the day.
