A World of Risk for a New Brand of Journalist
(Source: The New York Times, June 14, 2009) In his report, Brian Stelter analyzes professional and organizational challenges of journalists working for smaller news outlets drawing the recent examples of the detentions of Iranian American journalist Roxana Saberi in Iran and two other US journalists, affiliated with Current TV, in North Korea. Stelter documents the concerns over the risks associated with freelance journalists and smaller outlet journalists covering international conflict and human rights violation.

Stelter also reports that new generation journalists, mostly working for cable channels and online media, are subsumed into "one do-it-all position" as they operate camera, report live and post impromptu comments/reports online with the help of new communication technologies. Unlike mainstream media, smaller news outlets are not well-connected to pursue at diplomatic and government levels for the release of their detained journalists. The silence of Current TV on the detention of their journalists in North Korea for three months is a good example of that reality, Stelter reports. Full Report

The State of the News Media 2009: An Annual Report on American Journalism
The State of the News Media: An Annual Report on American Journalism has recently been released. This survey is conducted by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts (Source: Journalism.org).

The key findings centered on the coverage of the 2008 presidential election between ethnic and mainstream media. One of the findings is, “Both Hispanic and African American media took how-to approach to their election reporting than did the mainstream outlets. In many cases the ethnic media acted as teachers, voter-advocate and even watchdogs. Indeed, both Spanish-language and African American newspapers devoted more than twice the space as English-language ones to explaining specifics on voting, such as necessary documents and when polls close.”

Another observation of the report is: African American print dedicated significant space - more than any other medium - to the historic nature of Obama's candidacy and election. Almost a quarter of the election coverage studied was dedicated to the issue, twice that of mainstream newspapers.
