PhD Student Kennesha Smith Selected for Professional Development Training Series
LSU School of Social Work PhD Student Kennesha Smith selected to participate in Professional Development Training Series on Poverty and Economic Mobility Research

Baton Rouge, LA — LSU School of Social Work PhD Student Kennesha Smith has been selected to participate in a Professional Development Training Series on Poverty and Economic Mobility Research, hosted by the Institute for Research on Poverty. This prestigious selection will enable Smith to attend a series of virtual quarterly trainings focused on effective strategies for engaging affected communities in the research process, data visualization, and infographics, communicating with policy audiences, and exploring diverse research career paths outside of academia. She will also attend workshops on ensuring an equity lens in communications and understanding the role of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in federal policy.
The program is open to students from groups underrepresented in academia as defined by the National Institutes of Health or attending universities not designated as an R1 “very high research activity” by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Smith will receive a stipend of $500 for her year-long involvement in the series.
“I am excited about the opportunity to participate in the professional development training series on poverty and economic mobility research which will increase my understanding of policy-relevant research,” said Smith. “As a student that exhibits a strong interest in policy implications for unhoused populations, I look forward to utilizing my training in this area for my future research endeavors.”
