School of Kinesiology Receives COSMA Accreditation
LSU is the first land grant university to achieve excellence milestone
January 29, 2018
Baton Rouge, LA -- The Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) awarded LSU’s School of Kinesiology with a seven year accreditation for B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs focused in sport management. Louisiana State University is the first land grant university to receive COSMA accreditation and is one of only two universities with accredited doctoral programs.
COSMA is an accrediting body that serves to promote and recognize excellent sport management higher education. It is the only organization offering discipline-specific accreditation in sport management. COSMA offers its seal of approval to programs that demonstrate academic excellence, achievement in student learning outcomes, and continual innovation and improvement. Among the requirements for accreditation, there must be links between the classroom and practitioners in the community to offer real world experience to course work, faculty must be current in their fields and active in their professional contributions to the discipline, and must commit to the development of students into well-educated and ethical professionals.
“The degree programs in sport administration and management have grown rapidly at LSU and are recognized as excellent programs. The BS in Sport Administration, approved in 2009, has grown to include approximately 500 students. The graduate specializations in sport management at both the MS and Doctoral level have also flourished over the past decade,” Said Dr. Melinda Solmon, director of the School of Kinesiology. “The programs all provide students with strong academic background as well as hand-on experiences that enable students to compete for the very best jobs in the industry and to be very successful in the workplace. Completing the accreditation process for these programs is a monumental step and is a testament to the quality of the programs.”
Undergraduate sport administration student, Ryan Ellinghausen, spoke about his own experiences and the emphasis the program places on professional development saying, "This program has opened so many doors for me when it comes to career opportunities. When I chose sport administration as my major, I didn't know where I wanted to go. Now, after three years in the program, I can truly say I am confident in knowing what I want to do and how I am going to get there."
