SPIELMANN AND QUIRIARTE COLLABORATE ON RESEARCH DURING RECENT SPACE EXPEDITION
Our school is out of this world. Literally.
In collaboration with colleagues from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard (Dr.
Vladimir Ivkovic and Ms. JoAnna Pollonais), Guillaume Spielmann, PhD, Associate Professor in the LSU School of Kinesiology and Heather Quiriarte, research manager for the project, examined the effects of microgravity on brain
blood flow and biomarkers of immune function and stress in Axiom Mission 3 backup
and Turkish Space Agency astronaut Tuva Atasever during a suborbital flight on June
8 conducted by Axiom Space and Virgin Galactic.
This groundbreaking research made history, as Tuva Atasever is only the second Turkish astronaut in his nation’s history after participating in the Galactic 07 flight. As part of this mission, Atasever conducted seven experiments, including three experiments in-flight with payloads embedded in his custom-built flight suit, one in order to understand the changes in intracranial pressure and its effect on human visual acuity through a headgear with brain activity monitoring sensors, and another using a dosimeter to measure Atasever’s ionizing radiation exposure.
