Mitchell & Wooten’s, The Crisis of Campus Sexual Violence, wins 2016 Outstanding Academic Title

1/18/17

LSU’s College of Human Sciences & Education’s associate dean, Dr. Roland Mitchell and Doctoral Candidate Sara Wooten’s book, The Crisis of Campus Sexual Violence, has been awarded the 2016 Outstanding Academic Titles (OAT) award, a prestigious honor presented to those voted the best in scholarly titles by Choice. In addition to being selected as an OAT, Wooten & Mitchell's volume was highlighted on the Top 25 Favorites list of the Choice editors.

“Ms. Wooten and Dr. Mitchell’s book award is a great example of the high impact and relevance of research in our college,” LSU’s College of Human Sciences & Education’s Dean Damon Andrew said. “This designation is well deserved and illustrates our scholars’ dedication to excellence and academic work that truly benefits our community.”

Choice, a well-known publication that provides the academic library community with reviews of books each month across 50 academic specialties, publishes a list of Outstanding Academic Titles each January.

The Crisis of Campus Sexual Violence is unique in providing a necessary and more holistic understanding of the challenges that colleges and universities face in implementing adequate and effective sexual assault prevention and response practices. It is a major contribution to scholarship on combating and preventing sexual violence on college campuses.

"Sara and I are honored to receive this award and I am so grateful for the opportunity she has given me to write with her,” said Dr. Mitchell.  “The Crisis of Campus Sexual Violence is just the beginning of an attempt fix the epidemic we have in many colleges and universities. It is so important that we address this need and help fight to eliminate sexual violence.”

Sara Carrigan Wooten is a Doctoral Candidate in Higher Education and Curriculum Studies in the Educational Leadership and Research department in the School of Education at Louisiana State University.

Louisiana Senator J.P. Morrell appointed her to a Louisiana Campus Sexual Assault Working Group in 2015. This group is tasked with identifying how higher education institutes are failing to protect their students. It develops sexual assault policy recommendations for colleges and universities in Louisiana. Wooten helped evaluate the Board of Regent’s uniform sexual assault policy for Louisiana higher education institutions. She also evaluated proposed legislation on campus police sexual assault training, campus climate surveys, sexual assault protective orders, and rape kit testing and handling procedures.

Dr. Roland Mitchell is an Associate Dean and Professor in the School of Education. He is co-editor of the Lexington Press of Rowman and Littlefield book series Race and Education in the 21st Century and he serves as the director of the Louisiana Summit on African American Male Educational Success.
