MikeGPT

MikeGPT is a custom Large Language Model (LLM) system for LSU faculty and staff with the following capabilities:

  • If you have an LSU-related question, ask MikeGPT. It has access to most of the LSU A&M's public data and documents, and is also multilingual (English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Italian, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati).
  • MikeGPT provides a private and secure alternative to ChatGPT for general tasks.

Access

MikeGPT is available exclusively to faculty and staff through LSU single sign-on at mikegpt.lsu.edu or through myLSU. Students will be granted access to MikeGPT in the spring 2025 semester.

Important considerations

  • Although the developers strive for the highest possible accuracy and reliability, MikeGPT, being an AI system, may sometimes produce incorrect output. Users should verify the information provided by MikeGPT as its responses are not authoritative and are intended to aid users in information gathering.
  • Some responses may take up to 10 seconds to generate. This delay is not due to slow software or AI performance; instead, it is because MikeGPT is actively researching its database to provide a response.

Effective Prompting

MikeGPT is most accurate when used effectively. Below are some tips improve its performance,

Include necessary details in your prompt. For example:

  • If you are a faculty member in Math and want to know how to contact your dean, instead of "What is the dean's email?", consider asking "How fo I contact the Dean of the College of Science?"
  • If you want to know the address of UAB, instead of asking "Where is UAB?", consider asking " What is the physical address of UAB?"

Be specific in your instructions. For example:

  • If you want a summary of an email, instead of "What is this about?...", consider saying "Summarize the following email:..."
  • If you want a list of faculty who research cybersecurity at LSU, instead of "Who is studying cybersecurity?", consider asking "Provide me with a list of the faculty members who research cybersecurity here at LSU."

Data Security and Privacy

MikeGPT is a complete software system custom-developed by LSU faculty, staff, and students. All software and data are hosted on LSU's IT cloud infrastructure.

  • MikeGPT can only be accessed through LSU single-sign-on. This is currently limited to LSU faculty and staff.
  • Unlike the free verison of ChatGPT, information input and output to/from MikeGPT are not shared with OpenAI. Microsoft, through which the model is hosted, may retain up to 30 days of inputs and outputs for abuse monitoring, according to their data privacy policies.
  • Upon first interacting with MikeGPT you will be asked to acknowledge the Terms of Use Agreement. As described therein, LSU collects all inputs to MikeGPT and all responses generated by MikeGPT. These data are used to improve MikeGPT and also for research purposes.

Providing Feedback

When the model responds, you can provide feedback to help the MikeGPT developers improve the service. Positive feedback is just as important as the negative feedback.

  • You can select "Like" (thumbs up) or "Dislike" (thumbs down) for positive or negative feedback, respectively.
  • You can submit up to 250 characters of open text feedback in addition to like/dislike. This can be used to explain why the model's response was or was not correct or helpful.

Missing Data Sources

The subsequent sources are not presently included in MikeGPT's database; therefore, inquiries regarding them may not be adequately addressed. Some of these sources may be integrated in the future:
