Creating Self-Regulated Learners Book CoverMost students have serious misconceptions about learning, especially about the amount of effort and focus it requires and your role in their learning process. One way to dispel these misconceptions and help students understand what learning actually involves is to teach them how to become self-regulated learners. Self-regulated learning is the metacognitive skill and practice of strategically planning, monitoring, and evaluating one's learning—a key success habit that few students know about. During this keynote, you will hear about some of the research showing that instructors can improve their students’ exam performance and overall achievement by inducing students to practice self-regulated learning. After it, you will be able to explain what self-regulated learning is, how it goes beyond metacognition, where it came from, and how students benefit from practicing it.

10:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. - Break

11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Workshop: The Top 10 Best and Worst Things That I Have Seen

Dr. Linda Nilson directed teaching and learning centers full-time for 27 years. During this time she observed hundreds of faculty teaching classes and interviewed thousands of undergraduates, in addition to teaching her own classes. She saw a lot and heard a lot about what and what doesn’t enhance student engagement, motivation, learning, and respect for the instructor. Among the topics she will address are setting assessable learning outcomes, implementing the best practices for giving students practice, and choosing the most effective teaching methods for your outcomes. This overview of best and worst teaching practices will enable you to capitalize on the experience of other faculty in avoiding their pitfalls and building on their successes.
