How do I update my Dialer software?

AT&T will periodically release new versions of the Dialer software for Windows and Macintosh. You should try to download these new versions when they become available to take advantage of new features and fixed problems.

The URL to get new versions of the 'Dialer' is:

What if there is no local phone number listed for my city?

    • Call the AT&T Help Desk to get a local access number for a city nearest the one you are in. Using this 'nearest city' phone number will incur a long distance charge based on your call to that city.

    • Alternatively, you can use the fee-based access phone number at 1-800-590-4857 to dial into the internet. This will cost you $6.00/hr with additional hourly access charges billed at 30-second increments..

    • AT&T is always adding more local access numbers to their phone list. Cities which do not have a local access number now may have one in the future. You should try to keep the phone list used by your Internet Dialer current by downloading the latest phone list from AT&T. Internet Dialers from AT&T have an option to update the phone list . You can also go to the AT&T Internet Connection home page to get a copy of the latest phone list. The URL is http://www.attbusiness.net/helpcenter/addressnumbers.

Can I use some other e-mail client besides Netscape Navigator mail?

Your TigerNet e-mail is stored on a POP3 server assigned to your account. You can use any POP3 client (Eudora, Pegasus, etc) to send and receive e-mail.

However, the Dialers from AT&T support Netscape Navigator mail to the extent that each time you dialup to the AT&T Global Network, customized information about your e-mail account is automatically downloaded. You do not have to worry about the address for your POP3 server or SMTP server. Nor do you have to be concerned with any changes in your account since this information will automatically be updated each time you dialup.

If you prefer to use a different e-mail client, you need to call the AT&T Help Desk and explain what you want to do. Personal account users call 1-800-821-4612 while department sponsored account users call 1-800-588-5808

How can I access my TigerNet e-mail from campus?

The answer depends on the 'connectivity' of the PC from your campus location.

    • Dialing up from a campus desktop computer:

If your PC has no connection to the campus ethernet backbone, you will need to install the Dialer per the instructions in the TigerNet Access Kit available at the LSU Bookstore.

In this situation, you will be using a modem like you would at home. The only difference is that you need to specify '9,' as the prefix to dial before the local Baton Rouge number.

    • Desktop computer connected to the campus backbone:

If your desktop computer is connected to the campus backbone, you will already have the TCP/IP stack required to access the Internet. All you need to do is install and configure a POP3 client to access your TigerNet e-mail.

Some POP3 clients are Netscape, Eudora and Pegasus. You will need to configure these clients so that they will know where to go to get your TigerNet e-mail.

How can I change Service Plans?

Only Personal account users can change Service Plans. Your service plan was selected when you registered for your Internet account. You can change it any time after the first month. Call 1-800-821-4612 or connect to the AT&T Internet Connection page at http://www.attglobal.net.

Can I use TigerNet dialup to access my other LSU computer accounts?

Once you are connected to the AT&T Global Network, you can use SSH, Telnet or TN3270 commands to get to an LSU computer and logon as if you were on campus.

Why do I have trouble connecting or remaining connected when I dialup?

Problems connecting or staying connected to the AT&T Global Network may be due to many reasons. In most cases, the network is having temporary problems.

You can call the AT&T Help Desk and ask if there are any reported problems. Most of the temporary network problems are not reported to the AT&T Help Desk but they will know about long term outages. If there are dialup line problems, the AT&T Help Desk will give out a free 1-800 number that you can use until the dialup line problems are resolved.

Also we suggest that you try again at a later time. We have found that simply waiting and trying again at another time of the day solves the problem.

    How do I read Newsgroups?

The answer to this FAQ will only address getting started in Netscape News and not the details of using Netscape News.

    • From the Netscape Navigator screen click on the Windows option on the menu bar and select Netscape News.

A two-pane Netscape screen will appear that lists the AT&T news server in the left pane.

    • To get a list of the newsgroups available for reading, click on the Options option on the menu bar, then select 'Show all Newsgroups'.

The left pane will now display folders and newsgroups that may or may not have any letters to read. If there are messages, the 'Unread' column will list the number of messages you have not read. Click on the folders to expand and list the newsgroups under them.

    • To select a particular newsgroup for reading, click on the newsgroup name in the left pane. The window pane will list the messages available for reading. Simply click on each message to display its contents in a third window pane at the bottom of your screen.

How do I read LSU newsgroups?

At this time only users originating from an LSU computer can read LSU newsgroups. When you use your TigerNet dialup to access the LSU news server at news.lsu.edu, the server realizes that you came through AT&T and not LSU. Therefore, you will be denied permission to read the local LSU newsgroups.

The newsgroups provided by the AT&T news server are just as complete if not more so than the groups provided by LSU.

    How do I use Netscape?

Since you probably have a free version of the Netscape, technical problems will not be addressed by either AT&T, Netscape or LSU.

You can find help on using Netscape by starting Netscape and then clicking on the Help option on the menu bar. A new window will open. Click on the Handbook button on this window to read the Netscape manual.
