Porn chic, gender performance and halloween fashion

By Jackson Katz
(Oct. 25, 2013 | The Huffington Post) - It's Halloween season, so naturally there is an uptick in social commentary about what children's costumes reveal about the state of U.S. culture. For many years now, Halloween has been a case study in our ongoing cultural schizophrenia about entertainment media, where adults alternately lament the loss of youthful innocence and then facilitate, if not openly encourage, our children's exposure to exploitative sex and violence. A Good Men’s Rights Movement
is hard to find

By Jaclyn Friedman
(Oct. 24, 2013 | The American Prospect) - Only once the production crew taped the microphone on my dress did I have second thoughts. As part of an upcoming 20/20 special, I’d agreed to a sit-down with Paul Elam. Elam is founder and publisher of A Voice For Men (AVFM), one of the main hubs for the burgeoning “men’s rights’ movement.” Read more

Why Instagram censored my body

By Petra Collins
(Oct. 17, 2013 | The Huffington Post) - I wasn't shocked at the reaction I received from my t-shirt. I'm used to being told by society that I must regulate my body to fit the norm. I'm used to the fact that images of unaltered women are seen as unacceptable. I've taught myself to ignore it (as much as I can) and through the Internet (via sites like ROOKIE) and social media platforms (like Instagram and Facebook) I've been able to freely share images and start discussions about these issues. For a safe, legal abortion . . .

By Sally Kohn
(Oct. 10, 2013 | Women in the World/The Daily Beast) - I’m always struck that anti-abortion activists try to frame being pro-choice as meaning you’re anti-family and anti-children. Because when I think about abortion, I think about my daughter. My partner and I have a five-year-old. Her name is Willa. If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you will be inundated with adorable pictures of Willa. Read more

By Emine Saner
(Oct. 20, 2013 | The Guardian) - She is one of the BBC's most senior female executives, and although this in itself wouldn't necessarily mean that Liliane Landor is particularly concerned about women's representation in the media, it is clear that she is. Even so, she admits, the critical feedback the global news team received from its female audiences came as "a good wake-up call".
