Cheryl (Cuiller) Casey is the Open Education Librarian at the University of Arizona Libraries, where she has led open educational resource (OER) initiatives since 2014. She is a trainer for the Open Education Network (OEN) and is beginning her 5th year as an instructor for the OEN's Certificate in OER Librarianship.

In this presentation, Virginia Clinton-Lisell will present on what open pedagogy is and examples of how it can be implemented in a variety of disciplines. She will also present her research findings on student perceptions of how renewable assignments enhance motivation and representation in terms of social justice.

Transforming Teaching with Open Pedagogy. 

Abstract:  

Explore how to use open pedagogy in your classroom to engage students in creating content while building transferable skills they will be able to leverage in other courses and future careers. Hilary Bussell, Social Sciences Librarian, revised her course International Studies 4850: Understanding the Global Information Society using open pedagogy in 2021. In this course, students use information literacy concepts to explore how information is produced, disseminated, and interpreted across the world. Allowing them the opportunity to become content creators and experience decisions about how to license works they’ve authored has been an excellent opportunity to reinforce information literacy concepts in the classroom. To transform the course, Hilary partnered with Amanda Larson, the Affordable Learning Consultant to learn how to implement open pedagogy in the classroom using tools like Pressbooks and Hypothes.is.  In this session, participants will work to define open pedagogy for themselves, learn to scaffold open pedagogy assignments, and learn about how Hilary transformed her course.

• Understand and collaboratively define open pedagogy.
• Learn how to scaffold an open pedagogy assignment.
• Learn how to collaborate on a project using open pedagogy
• Leverage tools that enable an open pedagogical approach to teaching.

Understanding How They Learn: Universal Design for Learning and OER

Open educational resources (OER), open access (OA), and other areas focused on open values, have clear connections with universal design for learning (UDL). Much like UDL, open values are focused on student success, accessibility, and educational equity. This presentation will briefly discuss UDL guidelines, as outlined by the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) and explain the importance of faculty keeping these guidelines in mind when they are selecting and/or creating OER.

• Gain a basic understanding of universal design for learning and open educational resources.
• Begin searching for and/or creating OER that meets the unique learning needs of their students.

Marty Miller is the Art and Design Librarian at Louisiana State University Libraries. In 2021-2022, she served as the lead librarian for the Exploring the Arts cohort of the LOUIS Open Textbook Pilot. Her current project involves the creation of an OER tool for practicing and honing visual literacy skills. 

Building a Non-Textbook Visual Literacy OER:  Methods and H5P Activities Used
