LSU Electrical Engineering Professor Czarnecki Has Book Published By Oxford University Press

Professor Czarnecki headshotBATON ROUGE, LA – Forty years ago, LSU Electrical Engineering Professor Leszek Czarnecki embarked on the development of the “Currents’ Physical Components (CPC) Power Theory,” now also known as “Czarnecki’s Power Concept.” In the 20th century, nine different theories known as Schools of Power Theory were developed. To suggest a next School of the Power Theory of electrical systems, he first had to prove that all existing theories were erroneous. After doing so this past year, Oxford University Press began publishing Czarnecki’s 650-page book, “Powers and Compensation in Circuits with Nonsinusoidal Currents,” which is now the only correct Power Theory of Electrical Systems.

“This CPC-based concept has proven to be very effective in the identification of all existing misconceptions about energy flow and compensation,” Czarnecki said. “The publishing of this book ends a century-long, very emotional debate and scientific battle in electrical engineering.”

Just after Nicola Tesla invented the electrical power system used now around the world, German-American professor Charles Proteus Steinmetz challenged the concept of main power quantities used for describing electric energy flow in such systems in 1892. His questions initiated century-long investigations and debate on definitions of electric powers, with thousands of papers having been published. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) established a task force composed of 50 scientists to research the reactive power definition. An international Workshop on the Definition of Reactive Power was run bi-annually in Italy. The International School on Nonsinusoidal Currents and Compensation, chaired by Czarnecki, was run several times in Poland. Nine researchers involved in these investigations on electric powers were awarded the prestigious degree of IEEE Fellow. Czarnecki was selected as an IEEE Fellow in 1996.

Czarnecki’s recent theory was recognized by Poland’s president, who awarded Czarnecki with a degree of a Titled Professor of Technological Services. This isn’t the first time, however, that Czarnecki was recognized by the president of Poland.

In 1999,  the president of Poland awarded Czarnecki with the Knight Cross of the Medal of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his contribution to the security of Poland and Central Europe by helping them get admitted into NATO. Thanks to Czarnecki, both Louisiana senators voted in the U.S. Senate for the inclusion of the Republic of Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic into NATO.

Czarnecki is also known for his mountaineering ventures, which have taken him to the Himalayas, Alps, Andes, Kilimanjaro, Ruwenzori, Spitsbergen and McKinley. Upon his retirement from LSU in May, Czarnecki will set off on a two-week-long camping expedition through Iceland with his son and grandson.
