LSU Engineering Graduate Programs on the Rise in Latest Rankings

BATON ROUGE, LA – The LSU College of Engineering saw improvement in a number of rankings today with the release of the 2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Engineering Graduate Schools list.
The college’s graduate program was ranked T-109 overall and T-72 among public institutions, tying Kansas State University, the University of Miami, and Mississippi State University. Last year, the college’s graduate program was ranked T-113 overall.
Departments within the college also saw overall improvement in their respective rankings:
- Biological/Agricultural Engineering – T-27 overall and among public institutions (2022
ranking was T-23 overall). Tied with North Dakota State University and Utah State
University.
- Chemical Engineering – T-69 overall and T-45 among public institutions. (2022 ranking
was T-73 overall). Tied with Colorado State University, Dartmouth College, New York
University, Texas Tech University, University of South Florida, University of Tennessee,
and Washington State University.
- Civil Engineering – T-64 overall and T-44 among public institutions. (2022 ranking
was T-54 overall). Tied with New York University, University of Houston, University
of Illinois-Chicago, and University of Nevada-Reno.
- Computer Science – T-122 overall and T-81 among public institutions. (Not ranked in
2022). Tied with a number of schools including Southern Methodist University, Texas
Tech University, University of Massachusetts-Lowell, University of Miami, University
of Texas-San Antonio, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
- Computer Engineering – T-89 overall and T-54 among public institutions. (2022 ranking
was T-105 overall). Tied with Southern Methodist University, University of Maryland-Baltimore
County, University of South Carolina, and University of South Florida.
- Electrical Engineering – T-99 overall and T-62 among public institutions. (2022 ranking
was also T-99 overall). Tied with a number of schools including Kansas State University,
Temple University, University of Georgia, University of Missouri, University of Oklahoma,
and West Virginia University.
- Industrial Engineering – T-83 overall and T-62 among public institutions. (Not ranked
in 2022). Tied with Morgan State University and University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
- Mechanical Engineering – T-99 overall and T-62 among public institutions. (2022 ranking
was T-91). Tied with a number of schools including Kansas State University, San Diego
State University, Temple University, University of Georgia, University of Kansas,
University of Miami, University of Missouri, University of Oklahoma, and West Virginia
University.
- Petroleum University – T-8 overall and 7th among public institutions. (2022 ranking was 10th). Tied with the University of Southern California.
The rankings were based on surveys by U.S. News with 214 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees. This data collection was used for the overall rankings, 13 specialty rankings, and for populating each school’s profile on usnews.com. Statistical data was collected in fall 2021 and early 2022. In total, more than 200 engineering schools responded with the necessary data to calculate overall ranks based on weighted averages of the following:
- Quality assessment (40 percent).
- Faculty resources (25 percent).
- Research activity (25 percent).
- Student selectivity (10 percent).
