ENTM 2001 - Insects in the Environment

Prereq.: BIOL 1201, BIOL 1208; and either BIOL 1001, BIOL 1002 or equivalent. 2 hrs. lecture; 2 hrs. lab. Insect recognition, classification and life cycles; factors affecting insect diversity and abundance; interactions between insects and the natural environment.

 

 

ENTM 4006 - Fundamentals of Applied Entomology

Prereq.: ENTM 2001 or consent of instructor. 2 hrs. lecture; 2 hrs. lab. Principles and methodology of managing insect pests; emphasis on field crops insect pest management; interdisciplinary perspective.

Molecular Entomology (Course Description: This course is intended to provide students with an introduction to molecular methodologies utilized in the study of entomology. Students will learn to “speak the molecular lingo” while reviewing major research developments using molecular techniques in each emphasis of entomology. By the end of the semester, students will have developed a basic understanding of molecular techniques to be able to decipher new technologies they may encounter.)

 

Agroecology (Course Description: Special Topics in Entomology: Agroecology is designed to expose students to the idea of sustainable agriculture.  Students will learn “the application of ecological concepts and principles to the design and management of sustainable agro-ecosystems” by focusing on how different components of agro-ecosystems interact and by studying practices which optimize and stabilize yields to create ecological and socio-economic resilient farming.  Students will learn how these technologies can be used in conventional, organic, and indigenous farming with a special focus on entomology.  By the end of the semester, students will have developed an understanding of what agroecology has to offer and the barriers to its practice and widespread adoption.)
