Job Description:
In charge of monitoring the CAMD facility to maintain compliance with federal and
state regulations. This position is responsible for the radiation safety of CAMD staff
and CAMD users. This position reports administratively to the Director of CAMD and
operationally to the Director of the LSU Radiation Safety Office.
Job Responsibilities:
Administers a comprehensive radiation protection program at CAMD. Ensures compliance
with university policies as well as state and federal regulations governing the possession,
use, registration, transfer, and disposal of sources of radiation. (20%)
Monitors relevant regulations and standards and serves as the liaison between CAMD and the LSU A&M Radiation Safety Office. Develops, evaluates, and updates radiological control procedures, techniques, and protocols for CAMD for accuracy and applicability. (20%)
Manages radiation safety training program for CAMD staff and users. Responds to 24-hour on-call for radiological emergencies. (20%)
Collaborates with CAMD staff and individual principal investigators in the administration and development of research projects within the radiation protection program. Coordinates activities at CAMD that involve the use of sources of radiation to permit an adequate radiological control assessment. Has signature authority to approve proposals and projects for radiation uses. (20%)
Conducts radiation field surveys, radiation interlock system verification, and beamline certification. Reviews radiation dosimetry reports, investigates unusual events, and implements control measures as necessary. (10%)
Performs simulation of radiation pattern to determine shielding requirements. Inspects radiation-producing equipment. Administers non-ionizing radiation safety program. Carry out other radiation safety duties as assigned. (10%)
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Science, Radiological Engineering of
a closely related field and three (3) years professional technical experience in Health
Physics in a radiological protection environment. Eligibility to pursue a Certificate
in Health Physics. Working knowledge of federal and state radiological control regulations
governing sources of radiation as well as the theory and practice of radiation protection.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Science, Radiological Engineering or equivalent
and two (2) years of professional technical experience in Health Physics. Has passed
Part I of the Certified Health Physicist exam. Experience in radiation safety program
operation in an academic/regulatory/research environment and working knowledge of
synchrotron and linear accelerator is highly desirable.
Special/Physical Qualifications:
Position required to respond to radiological emergency situations outside of normal
working hours as well as be able to perform physical activities to verify radiation
interlock systems and exchange radiation monitoring devices. Due to the nature of
the position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol
testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67. Must also possess a valid
Louisiana driver's license.
