Psychology undergraduates awarded by CCELL

The Center for Community Engagement, Learning, and Leadership (CCELL) will award Undergraduate Psychology students Olivia Amorando, Shay Bayer, and Maxine Polma the Leadership's Engaged Citizen Program distinction at LSU's 2024 spring commencement. CCELL, in conjunction with Campus Life, established the program to support and recognize the accomplishments of undergraduate students who engage significantly with their communities to address critical community needs. The requirements for this award are completing a minimum of seven credit hours of coursework designated as service-learning by CCELL, performing a minimum of 100 approved hours of community service, and turning in a reflective paper detailing their service experience. A service-learning course that is offered by our department every semester is PSYC 4005. Olivia Amorando took PSYC 4005 with Dr. Beck and was a research assistant to Dr. Buckner. Shay Bayer and Maxine Polma both took PSYC 4005 with Dr. Zhang.

LPA awards Dr. Julie Buckner

Dr. Julie Buckner received the Louisiana Psychological Association's 2024 Contributions in Psychological Science Award. This award is given to an individual who has significantly increased knowledge of psychological concepts via research and dissemination of research findings. Dr. Buckner was chosen for the award based on her exemplary contributions to psychology.

National Institutes of Health awards Dr. Julie Buckner $822,000

The projects use ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to understand the impact of race-based microaggressions and other types of race-based discrimination on mental health & substance use among Black adults who engage in heavy drinking or use cannabis. The goals of these studies include identifying risk & protective factors to inform prevention & intervention efforts.
