Equine Medication Surveillance Laboratory
The Equine Medication Surveillance Laboratory was established in 1987 and has served as the official laboratory for the Louisiana State Racing Commission since that time. The laboratory is now housed in new, modern facilities and is located in the Louisiana Animal Disease and Diagnostics Laboratory (LADDL) building directly behind the School of Veterinary Medicine.
The laboratory screens over 8,000 urine and blood sets per year as part of its responsibility to assist in regulating the Louisiana Horse racing industry and has developed sophisticated methodology for screening, detection and confirmation of a wide range of drugs and their metabolites.
The laboratory also serves as a comprehensive analytical facility within the School of Veterinary Medicine and a source of information to the racing industry at large and the citizens of Louisiana regarding equine drug pharmacology, metabolism and clearance.
