New federal
rules concerning recreational and commercial fishing for red
snapper have raised numerous questions about the regulations
and the species’ biology. Answers to many of those questions
can now be found on the Louisiana Sea Grant Fisheries Web
site (www.seagrantfish.lsu.edu/faqs/index.html).
“Experts
from Sea Grant, Louisiana State University and the LSU AgCenter
were receiving numerous questions ranging from assessment
methodologies and catch-and-release survival to life history
of the species and basic biology,” said Glenn Thomas,
associate professor of fisheries for Louisiana Sea Grant and
LSU AgCenter. “To help keep the public informed, the
Web site was created.
“The site
isn’t meant to be encyclopedic on the topic, but it
will provide visitors with background on the basic issues,
as well as the latest research,” he added. Updates to
the Web site will be made as new information and questions
arise.
Since its establishment
in 1968, Louisiana Sea Grant has worked to promote stewardship
of the state’s coastal resources through a combination
of research, education and outreach programs critical to the
cultural, economic and environmental health of Louisiana’s
coastal zone. Louisiana Sea Grant, based at Louisiana State
University, is part of the National Sea Grant College Program,
a network of 32 programs in each of the U.S. coastal and Great
Lakes states and Puerto Rico.
