The Louisiana Wildlife
and Fisheries Commission approved a notice of intent to add
certain state-owned water bottoms in Terrebonne Parish to
the public oyster seed ground system.
The notice of intent
describes the proposed designation of approximately 500 water
bottom acres to the existing Lake Mechant Public Oyster Seed
Grounds. The commission will consider public comment on the
notice of intent prior to the promulgation of the final rule.
This additional acreage is contained within two areas with
the following descriptions:
Addition 1: Beginning
at a point on the border of the existing Lake Mechant Public
Oyster Seed Grounds at latitude 29 degrees 18 minutes 33.5533
seconds N and longitude 90 degrees 57 minutes 37.8295 seconds
W; thence southerly to a point at latitude 29 degrees 18 minutes
14.8543 seconds N and longitude 90 degrees 57 minutes 39.1397
seconds W; thence southerly to a point at latitude 29 degrees

The commission
approved the notice of intent as a first step in plans to
place this additional acreage under the management of the
state for the long-term benefit of the oyster resource in
the area. In addition, the designation of this acreage was
requested and recommended by the Louisiana Oyster Task Force.
